The girls program at Villarreal Houston Academy reached a historic milestone this weekend as our 16U Girls Academy team achieved something never before accomplished in the history of our academy.

Competing at the South Texas Presidents Cup State Finals in Round Rock, Texas, our girls entered the weekend knowing a spot at the Presidents Cup National Qualifiers in June was on the line. Facing some of the top programs in the state, Villarreal Houston rose to the challenge and proved once again that the development taking place in Northeast Houston can compete with anybody.

The road was far from easy.

Our girls battled against strong opponents including Soccer Central from San Antonio, Lonestar Soccer Club from Austin, and HTX Soccer from Houston. Every game demanded focus, composure, and resilience. At the end of the weekend, Villarreal Houston finished in 1st place with two victories and one loss, officially securing a ticket to the Presidents Cup National Qualifiers.

The defining moment came in the final match against HTX Houston.

Both teams entered the game fighting for the #1 position, knowing the winner would secure the top spot. The intensity, pressure, and emotions surrounding the match created a true championship atmosphere. But once again, this group showed the mentality that has defined them all season long.

Villarreal Houston battled through adversity and secured a massive 2-1 victory to claim the title and make academy history.

A Team Built on Resilience and Grit

What makes this achievement even more special is the journey this group has taken throughout the year.

This team has consistently responded in the biggest moments. From their district semifinal victory in Houston against a strong Texas Premier side to the state finals showdown against HTX, these girls have repeatedly demonstrated resilience, grit, and the ability to rise under pressure.

They continue proving that talent alone does not define successful teams — mentality does.

Throughout the season, this group has shown an incredible ability to stay united during difficult moments, refocus after setbacks, and compete with confidence against top-level opponents.

The Impact of Leadership and Sports Psychology

A major component of the team’s success during the final stretch of the season has been the leadership and guidance of Coach Omar Elizondo.

As the pressure intensified during the Presidents Cup run, Coach Omar helped the players mentally prepare for the challenges ahead through tactical adjustments, refocusing exercises, and sports psychology strategies that allowed the girls to perform with confidence in critical situations.

The transformation in the team’s mentality during the final two games was evident.

The girls played fearless soccer, trusted each other, and embraced the competitive moments that often decide championships.

Building the Future of Girls Soccer in Northeast Houston

This achievement represents far more than a tournament victory.

At Villarreal Houston Academy, our mission has always been to provide players in Northeast Houston with opportunities to compete and develop at the highest possible level. Over the last several years, our academy has continued investing heavily into the growth of our femenil program by creating high-performance environments, bringing experienced coaches into our structure, and opening pathways for girls to compete regionally, nationally, and internationally.

For many years, families in Northeast Houston often felt they needed to leave the area to find elite opportunities for girls soccer.

This group is helping change that narrative.

Our players are proving that Northeast Houston can produce teams capable of competing with the best clubs in Texas while maintaining our focus on long-term player development, technical quality, tactical understanding, and character building.

More Than Results

While winning championships is exciting, the true success of this group goes beyond trophies and qualifications.

These girls have become role models for the younger generation inside our academy. Their work ethic, resilience, commitment, and belief in each other are helping create a culture that will continue inspiring future Villarreal Houston players for years to come.

This historic qualification is another major step forward for our academy and for girls soccer in our community.

The journey now continues to the Presidents Cup National Qualifiers this June.

And our girls are ready for the challenge.

Endavant.
